Dining Winners and Losers of the Week

Your  savvy Dining Diva and her husband Richard took advantage of dineLArestaurant week big time.

We had lunch for less at Spago, albeit rather small portions, but yummy fare, three courses beginning with a tomato soup followed by halibut and ending with unstructured cheesecake, washed down with wine (extra).

We also did a mid-day meal at Treis at the SLS Hotel, that one was plentiful and exceptional, again 3 courses, the steak salad was the best.

Chaya Brasserie was just so so although the evening was a delight because we went with two friends, whose company we enjoy.  The meal just wasn’t worth the price, even reduced.

Did something different, went to a Sunday champagne buffet brunch at the  Renaissance hotel. At first glance it didn’t look diva-friendly–a large, not overly attractive room that seemed more suitable for meetings that cozy brunches. The smorgasbord was accompanied by ear-piercing music blasting from a live group. We had to change tables and still couldn’t hear each other speak.

But the $34.95 spread was tasty, esepcially the top quality smoked salmon and NY-style bagels, the roast beef, cheese cake and made to order egg  dishes, good omelettes, etc.

Stopped  for wine at the Tar Pit on La Brea, love the place, must go back, great barkeep who treated us to Happy Hour wine prices ($5  a generous pour)  even though it had ended 10 minutes before we got there.

Took out food from what I now know is the much over-rated Mozza, didn’t much care for it and it wasn’t cheap.

Did our Friday lunch at Spago, which doesn’t participate in dineLArestaurat week but always has a business person special which we love. Did the salmon in stead of the filet this time, very good, and always the amazing Caesar salad, which is dress to perfection, and the NY style cheesecake  that is out of this world and such a generous cut, we take some home.

Bon appetit.
